Language Proficiency

Nurses
St. Boniface Hospital uses the Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) to measure reading, writing, speaking and listening English skills in applicants for whom English is an additional language. There are many courses for Nurses to upgrade their English language skills, provided they have Permanent Resident or Refugee status.

The College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba (CRNM) and the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Manitoba (CLPNM) recommend all internationally educated nurses first become familiar with the National Nursing Assessment Service (NNAS) to help guide them through the process of becoming a qualified nurse in Manitoba. There is also a CRNM handbook that is helpful.

The CRNM and CLPNM accept English assessments from either the Canadian English Language Benchmark Assessment for Nurses (CELBAN) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). The nurses make their own arrangements to do the CELBAN or the IELTS.
Manitoba Nurses Union (MNU) offers free ten-week CELBAN preparatory classes.

Security, Housekeeping & Food Services
Candidates for whom English is an additional language will undergo a job-specific English assessment with the SBH English Language Services Coordinator when applying for positions in Security, Housekeeping and Food Services.

Confidentiality: There will be occasions when you know and/or have access to important confidential information affecting SBH’s activities. You will hold this information in strictest confidence. You agree that, except with the consent of SBH, you will not either during the term of your employment or at any time thereafter disclose any confidential information to any person not in the employ of SBH, nor shall you use the information for any purpose other than the purposes of SBH. Failure to comply with this confidentiality clause will result in disciplinary action that may include termination of employment and/or reimbursement to SBH for any losses or damages resulting from the violation.
