Year in Review

The following is a sample of volunteer positions at St. Boniface Hospital – available volunteer opportunities may vary. If you are interested in volunteering at St. Boniface Hospital, Volunteer Services staff will meet with you to identify a position that is well suited to your skills and interests.

Daytime only volunteer opportunities
(Monday to Friday)

Councils and Committees
Help build bridges between patients, families, and staff by joining a Council or Committee (e.g. the Patient and Family Advisory Council). Volunteers support Hospital staff by providing input on issues that matter most to patients and their families.

Geriatric Recreation
Volunteers assist during recreation activities for seniors at the Geriatric Day Hospital (located offsite in the Dominion Centre at 69B Goulet St.).

Hospitality: Patient Registration
Once a patient is admitted to the Hospital via the Patient Registration Department, volunteers escort the patients to various areas of the Hospital. Volunteers may be asked to deliver Well Wishes and flowers to patients.

Improvement Activities
St. Boniface Hospital is always looking for opportunities to improve the patient’s experience. Volunteers have the opportunity to help improve processes and guide decisions that will have a lasting impact on patient care during improvement activities with Hospital staff.


Daytime, evening, and weekend volunteer opportunities
(Please note: we have limited opportunities during evenings and weekends)

Art at the Bedside
Volunteers provide art materials and ideas for projects to engage patients in the creative process at the bedside. Volunteers are trained in a variety of projects, allowing them to offer several art project options to help alleviate stress and boredom for patients.

Buhler Art Gallery Host
The Buhler Art Gallery is a unique environment in the Hospital. Volunteers engage guests in visual art and music performances. Volunteers greet visitors, respond to their inquiries, and provide brochures and other reading material to Gallery visitors. 

Communion Ministry or Chapel Escort
Volunteers assist the Hospital’s Spiritual Care Department in meeting patient’s spiritual and religious needs, by offering Holy Communion (Eucharist) to patients (upon request), visiting, and providing support to patients. Volunteers escort patients to Sunday service in the Chapel.

Emergency Ambassador
Volunteers greet and provide directions to patients and visitors as they present to the waiting room of the Emergency Department. Volunteers assist in ensuring patients are comfortable while waiting to be treated by medical care staff. Emergency Ambassadors must be 18 years or older.

Gift Shop
Volunteers provide friendly and courteous customer service to visitors, patients and staff in St. Boniface Hospital’s Gift Shop, located in the Everett Atrium. Proceeds from sales are directed to the Hospital’s Auxiliary, which supports patient care. Volunteers are required to take the Manitoba Lotteries online training course.

Hospitality: Main/South Entrances
Volunteers are the first point of contact for patients and visitors when they enter the Hospital. Volunteers are asked by Information Desk staff to escort patients and visitors to various areas throughout the Hospital. Occasionally, this position requires pushing a wheelchair.

Library Program
Volunteers provide reading material from a mobile book cart to patients at the bedside and in clinical waiting areas. Volunteers are encouraged to visit and interact with patients while providing this service. Library assistants sort and prepare book and magazine donations for distribution and for placement in the Patient/Staff Library.

Newspaper Delivery
Newspaper volunteers deliver complimentary newspapers to patients early weekday and Saturday mornings. This is a great opportunity to explore the Hospital while following a designated route and interact with patients at the bedside.

NICU Veteran Parent
Veteran parent volunteers provide informal support and guide parents with infants in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit through their journey.

Volunteers assist technical staff with day to day activities as required in a laboratory setting.  Volunteers may assist clinical research studies by collecting and entering data.
