St. Boniface Through Lean Principles - Our Journey
February 2013

We began our lean transformation journey in 2008, building on past efforts to improve patient care. Our 2008 strategic plan identified lean as a system to accelerate and sustain the pace of change and improvement. Our 2012 strategic plan focuses our plans and activities to continue this journey, involve more people throughout the organization and in different ways, find new opportunities for improvements and share our experiences and results with others.

Our approach to lean transformation is based on four principles:

  • focus on patients
  • leadership commitment
  • patient, staff and physician engagement and
  • investment in the improvement processes

We are now engaged in transforming processes throughout the organization to align activities in all program areas with our strategic objectives. We have identified  the need to significantly improve patient care by attending to the many processes involved from the point of admission,  care planning and transitions through service areas to discharge at the appropriate time. Our goal is to provide the right care to the patient, in the right place, and at the right moment to improve patient safety and outcomes.

As we gained experience, so has demand spread to all parts of the organization.

Our strategy is proving successful and we are achieving results. Patients are less exposed to harm, satisfaction has increased, and our employees are more engaged than they were in 2008. We are also seeing savings, efficiencies and the spontaneous spread of ideas.

To do this, we are working with leadership to align purpose, people and processes, focusing on activities that will achieve significantly improved patient care working within available resources.
